2026 Dubbed the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Frogs are not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. But, their prevalence has seemingly exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are bona fide titles centered on frogs.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this rise, I conducted a detailed review into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings paint a clear picture: a marked increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's elevated place in the broader culture is also apparent elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the wave in gaming appears especially strong.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Frankly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs have built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.

A number of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year so far.

If these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be entering a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
