Alphabet Commits $15bn to Build AI Computing Facility in India
Google's parent company Alphabet is set to invest $15 billion to build an artificial intelligence data center in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
This center, to be established in the port city of Visakhapatnam, is going to be a part of the worldwide network of Google of artificial intelligence hubs spread across a dozen nations.
"This represents the biggest AI facility that we plan to invest in across the globe, excluding the US," Thomas Kurien stated at an conference in Delhi, the national capital this Tuesday, mentioning that the funding is to be distributed over the next five years.
The revelation occurs when American President Donald Trump has been urging American companies to focus on domestic investment.
The Expanding Position of India in Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure
The country has risen as a prime location for AI data centres. The nation's low data costs and swiftly increasing online population have established it as a focal point for cloud and AI expansion for major tech firms.
"The infrastructure will deliver our cutting-edge technology to businesses and consumers in the nation, enhancing AI innovation and promoting progress throughout the nation," commented Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.
Specifics of the Project
A definitive arrangement to finalise the venture is scheduled for signing soon, state authorities confirmed.
"It constitutes a significant advancement for our state's technological advancement, progress, and global standing," stated the state's technology minister Nara Lokesh, the technology minister.
The venture will merge computing and artificial intelligence facilities with green energy infrastructure and an broader fiber-optic system.
The State's Data Hub Strategy
The project forms part of the Andhra Pradesh government's strategy to develop six gigawatts of data center capability by the year 2029.
Data centres are actual buildings that contain the computing and networking equipment that companies use to collect, process, store, and distribute data.
They contain hosting servers, memory systems and network equipment like firewalls and routers, along with the necessary power and cooling systems to function properly.
Funding Benefits
Across Andhra Pradesh, the local administration has been granting reduced-cost property and power to draw worldwide funders.
Sector Expansion
The country's computing facility market has grown rapidly over the past five years, exceeding the one gigawatt capacity threshold in the year 2024 and nearly tripling its capability from 2019.
