AI-generated images purporting to show Venezuela's president under arrest after his apprehension by the US have gained countless of views on social media.
How AI Images of Maduro Surfaced Rapidly
Initial fabricated AI image seemingly showing him led off a aircraft emerged a brief time later. The graphic was unpublished by any verified American sources; it was instead published on X by an account purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
Our analysis used Google’s SynthID, determining the picture was created or altered with Google AI.
Additional synthetic images were disseminated in the subsequent period, appearing to show additional perspectives of the leader detained. Visible identifying marks on these pictures reveal they were posted by an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
SynthID indicates the further images were similarly produced using AI technology.
Authentic Image Released but Fakes Continued
Donald Trump released the genuine photograph of Maduro handcuffed aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. But even after this real photo was published, AI-generated images persisted online but were updated to show the gray sweatsuit worn by Maduro.
Reverse image searches reveal these updated fakes were first posted on TikTok by a digital art account. Again, the AI-watermark detector found the new graphics were created or altered Google AI.
