James Comey court appearance
Comey has maintained his innocence about the indictments

Former Federal Bureau of Investigation head James Comey has denied the charges to making false statements to US legislators and hindering a lawmaking procedure.

His legal representative filed the plea on his behalf in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

His attorney announced he would attempt to have the case terminated for several causes including that his the accused, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was formally accused soon after Donald Trump pushed his attorney general to move forward against him.

Judicial Process

During the hearing on Wednesday, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald informed the magistrate they aimed to file multiple motions to terminate the case before a court case, claiming the legal action was vindictive and that a US attorney was improperly appointed to assume control of the case.

The former director's proceedings was first overseen by Erik Siebert, who left his position under scrutiny from Donald Trump after his probe into an additional opponent - the New York official - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Judicial Environment

Mr Comey came across in good spirits as he entered the legal venue on Wednesday, speaking with his legal team and making jokes. He was joined by his spouse, Mrs Failor and daughter Maureen, a US lawyer who the previous administration dismissed.

Upon hearing to the magistrate read his constitutional guarantees and the pair of allegations against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, the defendant was questioned if he comprehended the accusations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the court.

Historical Information

James Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was fired about a few months into Donald Trump's first term as commander-in-chief. At the time, he was leading an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.

Throughout his leadership, the director triggered a negative reaction from Democrats when he stated just days before the national vote that he was investigating political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Legal actions against Clinton were not pursued, causing criticism from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors allege the former director gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he deceived the legislative body by claiming he had not authorized someone at the agency to release to news outlets details about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also allege James Comey of "wrongfully trying to influence, hinder and impede" the panel by providing untrue information to it.

Public Statements

In a video the former director posted to his Instagram after he was accused, he declared he was innocent and alleged Donald Trump of acting like a "tyrant".

"Our household have known for a long time that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump," he said. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Thus initiate a trial."

The charges against Mr Comey came after Trump posted on digital channels calling for his attorney general, Ms Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and others.
