The Gaming Giant Recruits Popular Battle Royale Producer to Boost Troubled Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Transition Follows Poor Reception

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last fall.

Recently, 2K president a key figure updated staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a clearer direction.

The president expressed that the team is now refining the project with a renewed approach, aiming to address gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Recruitment

The news mirrors a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the complete content from the president's announcement:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented developers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to persist.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It revealed the need for a sharper brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to consideration and overhauled the title with a renewed direction - one that’s positioned to fulfill its promise to our fans.

The trust in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the incredible progress you’ve made, I’m excited to announce the new hire as the new Director of 31st Union. Following some time of discussions, he officially joins us on Monday, October 20.

His guidance and background in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having spent the last 15 years creating and managing some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in receiving him soon. We are all excited to keep observing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to ahead.

Experience of the Incoming Head

Brinkman currently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Details and Vision

Project Ethos was announced in October 2024 in conjunction with a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description reads. "Challenge the rivals with new abilities, challenges, and tests that change every round. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Or aim high, put it on the line, and hope your squad can earn top ranking? The option is in your hands."

The game has not yet received an confirmed release date or platforms, but players can look forward to additional details as production progresses.
